Private Beaches and Jellyfish in Barbados
Barbados makes it clear that they do not intend to be like other Caribbean locals that do not have access to their own beaches on their island home - Linda
Private beaches – no way!
by TONY BEST
FORGET ABOUT IT!
Don't even bother to ask for it because it's just not going to be allowed.
That, in essence, was how Barbados made it clear to a United Nations (UN) panel of human rights experts that private beaches were not allowed in this country.
The reasons are straightforward.

Several readers have e-mailed about stories on the Internet concerning dangerous jellyfish in Barbados - Linda
Box Jellyfish, Moon Jellyfish, and others species are common throughout parts of the Caribbean, but the sightings of the Portuguese Man-O-War Jellyfish (shown above) is a cause for concern.
From what I've read they were first sighted on the West Coast of Barbados, but there have also been sightings on the Southern coast of the island.
I have never known this particular species of jellyfish to be found in the waters of Barbados, so this is an unusual event. It appears that strong ocean currents have brought this particular variety of jellyfish to the waters around Barbados.
The Portuguese Man-O-War Jellyfish looks like a big bubble, and has a pinkish, blue or violet color, grows from three to 12 inches in length, and has very long tentacles.
The sting from the Man-O-War causes temporary paralysis, fever, shock to the nervous system, breathing difficulties and cardiac arrest. These jellyfish are dangerous even when they wash up on shore, and should not be handled.
Medical experts say the poison from this particular jellyfish is about 75% as powerful as cobra venom. The best medical advice is to apply ice, and get medical attention immediately.
One of our frequent clients to the Caribbean and Hawaii says that there is a sunblock that also protects against jellyfish. He says it works, but I have not tried it or endorse it.

Dining on the Beach - Barbados
Dining On The Beach
Dress for dinner?
Actually, you can go in a bathing suit at the beachfront restaurants highlighted in the February issue of Conde Nast Traveler.
The magazine's picks for the best places to dine on the beach in the Caribbean include two on the island of Barbados:
Fish Pot Restaurant, Shermans, Barbados, lunch and dinner, $13 to $35, including curried chicken and crab salad. (Cover-ups required for your bathing suit at this one.)
Il Tempio, Fitts Village, Barbados, lunch and dinner, $14 to $46, Italian cuisine.
Karibuni Restaurant, Ilet Pinel, St. Maarten, grilled entrees, lunch only, $16 to $33.
La Plage Restaurant, Plage de St. Jean, St. Barts, lunch and dinner, $20 to $55, described as the type of meal you would "expect on the Cote d'Azur."
Snack Zen, Shell Beach, St. Barts, sandwiches, lunch only, $9 to $12.
Scilly Cay, Island Harbour, Anguilla, lunch only, $25 to $50.
Chill Out, Long Bay, lunch and dinner, $5 to $27, "unabashedly Jamaican" food, like fish with rice and peas.
Barbados Beaches & Nightlife Picked by About.com
Robert Curley writes for Caribbean for Visitors at About.com, and his latest article picks Barbados for "Beaches" and "Nightlife", and while I wholeheartedly agree, Barbados has so much more to offer. Coral Reef Education
The Caribbean Conservation Association (CCA) is planning to give Barbados residents an opportunity to get hands-on education of the islands reef systems.
The government is proposing to create an artificial reef in Carlisle Bay, and the CCA's plans are to use the artificial reef and models for educating future generations about reef conservation and protection.
On the table is a proposal to put small artificial reefs close to the shore in shallow water to allow young children access. The children could see a natural reef, as well as the artificial reefs. The primary schools in Barbados are developing a People and Corals program, and this proposal will give the kids a "living" laboratory.
Artificial reefs will also put located at deeper depths for older children and adults.
The CCA has been in contact with an overseas company that has already developed online training modules in coral reef ecology that can also be used in the classroom, and at home.
