It's National Rum Day!

Malibu Coconut Rum and Orange Juice later this afternoon . . .

The day it was discovered that molasses (a substance created when sugarcane is refined into sugar) could be fermented into alcohol - was the birth of the rum industry.

Usually there is an historical references as to why celebrate certain days are celebrated - In Barbados, you could definitely say the timing coincides with the end of the sugar cane harvest.

However several international English speaking countries celebrate Rum Day on October 21.

After a bit of research, I am not sure why this particular day of August 16th is celebrated here in the U.S. If any of our readers knows the answer - please inform us!
