Barbados Has 116,675 Vehicles on the Road
Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 02:48PM The Minister of Public Works revealed that Barbados now has over 116,000 vehicles on the road, in fact the exact number quoted was 116,675!
Back in March we reported on the traffic congestion on the island, and now the number of vehicles on the island has been reported.
Statistics from the license department break down the number to 94,496 private cars; 3,045 hired cars; 1,674 taxis; and in the public transportation system, there are 225 minibuses and 309 omnibuses; 289 taxis; 105 tour coaches and 582 maxi taxis.
Looking at the growth rate of vehicles in Barbados over the last ten years, the minister said that the country has grown almost 100%, pointing out that in December 31, 1994, there was a total of 55,668 and of that number, there were 42, 821 private cars.
The traffic congestion has prompted a second road traffic amendment bill in the House of Assembly, which includes a new traffic program over the next six months of fixed penalties and a demerit point system.
Visitors who have not visited the island before think that 166 miles would be easy to navigate, however traffic congestion is quite heavy on the island, and getting around does often involve leaving early if you have to be somewhere at a particular time.

Seriously, efficient sollutions will require sacrifice from all "Bajans" but there is no escape from some asministrative and economic limitations.
