Grantley Adams International Airport Medical Facility

Plans are being proposed for the construction of a new fully-equipped medical facility at Barbados'Grantley Adams International Airport.

This will add to the cost of the multi-million dollar renovation that has been plagued by delays and cost over runs.

Recently a tourist from the UK died of an asthma attack at the airport, and this has fueled health and safety concerns over the number of visitors passing through the airport for the upcoming World Cup.

Since the newly proposed medical facility was not part of the original renovation plan, the facility will have to be added somewhere in the plans.

The airport has improved the inside terminal, which is quite large and airy. The ticketing hall is like the  airport in Honolulu in that it is covered, but also open to the elements.grantley adams airport inside the terminal.jpg

Other renovation includes the airport restaurant, new executive lounges, additional ticketing areas, new retail and food courts, and a new chapel for the mezzanine level. And now a new medical facility.

The outside design is similar to the U.S. Denver Airport which can only be described as  huge spiked tents serving as the roof covering.

barbados airport canapies.jpgThe look of the airport is ultra modern, and looks like no other airport anywhere in the Caribbean.

Another distinction for the Grantley Adams Airport was it was the only airport in the Caribbean where the Concorde could land.

A custom built hanger houses the super sonic Concorde, and a future museum is on the drawing boards.

Does anyone know if the restarant in the airport has reopened? We were there in April this year (2006)and there was only one snack bar with resultant very long queues. The departure lounge is great. We are likely to be back next April - guess by then there will be some changes.

Hi,

Thanks for stopping by.

When I was there earlier this year, very limited food service was available.

Chefette (local fast food brand), KFC and Island Grill will be operational starting in December 2006.

We've just returned from BGI after a 4 day 'flying' visit. Last year we had the privilege of using the new departure hall, this year the new arrivals - but the queues! One Virgin 747 and an early BA 777 resulted in over an hour to get through immigration. 5 out of a possible 18 booths were in operation! The real point of my blog here is does anyone else think the roofscape of the arrivals was designed to mimic Concorde flightdeck windows. From the outside there is more than a passing resemblance?
