Concorde Museum On Board for September
Thursday, March 30, 2006 at 07:12AM The BTI (Barbados Tourism Investment, Inc.) announced that the temporary exhibition center featuring the British Airways Concorde will be completed by September of this year.
The hanger where the Concorde is located was damaged in 2004, and the hanger has been repaired. An official in the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport stated the hangar can withstand winds from a category four hurricane.
Their were rumors the retired super sonic aircraft was damaged, and this statement by BTI and Ministry officials was to refute any claims of damage to the Concorde.
According to an article in the Barbados Advocate, Senator Rudy Grant, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport stated, "The Government of Barbados is committed to providing an aviation museum at the Grantley Adams International Airport where the Concorde is the centre piece.
"Contrary to some misguided public utterances the Government of Barbados did not pay any money for the Concorde at the Grantley Adams International Airport. Contrary to some misguided comments the Concorde at the Grantley Adams International Airport is in good condition," and he added, that there is no rusting on the aircraft".
Tourism officials believe the island can properly develop the area where the Concorde is located as a tourism attraction which can distinguish Barbados and allow us to properly market and promote Barbados.
Grant said with increasing competition in the tourism sector Barbados has had to find ways to carve a niche for itself. "We have to find attractions which are different. We have to distinguish our tourism product and our tourism environment from the other players within this region and we believe that the Concorde museum will provide that for us".
