The Crane Hotel, Barbados

The Crane Hotel was actually the very first Caribbean island resort.

History
Back in the late 1700's, ladies could not be seen "sea bathing" in public, and the area, which is now the current day Crane, was one place on the island where the ladies could descend the steps which were cut into the steep cliff for private bathing.

This place was then popularly known as "The Horse" - I could not find where the name originated (if someone knows, please e-mail).

By the 1800's the south east coast of Barbados was known as a healthy place to visit due to the cooling trade winds, and warm waters.

Many travelers came to Barbados, including the first U.S. President George Washington, to benefit from the climate.

During this time a small shipping port had developed, and a crane was used to move the ship's cargo either up or down, and that's how the present day hotel came to be named.

In 1887 the property was turned into the Caribbean's first hotel, and the present day 1887 Hotel's south wing was part of the original blueprint.

The Crane Hotel sits on a breezy cliff overlooking over half a mile of pink sand beach, and offers a panoramic view of the Atlantic ocean.

This is a hotel that has managed to blend old world charm with modern day sophistication.

From every angle of this property, the ocean colors are a wide array of blues, turquoises and aquamarines.

Crane Beach has been described as one of the best beaches in the world, and you only have to physically see this beach to agree that it is truly magnificent.

No rocky beach here, just take a walk and experience the soft, pink sand beneath your feet.

The hotel swimming pool is also known around the world.

Travel and fashion magazines have been featuring this pool in their pictures and publications for years.

The Crane has been transformed from the oldest hotel in the Caribbean to a premier luxury resort.

Two different types of accommodations are offered:

1887 Resort Apartments
The original hotel offers spacious oceanfront apartments with beautiful hardwood floors, fine antique furniture, 12' ceilings, and wrap around balconies that offer one of the best ocean views in the Caribbean.

The Crane Private Residences
Exclusive resort living and world class amenities is the best description of the Private Residences.

Luxury furnishings include: Barbadian mahogany furniture; fine art; oriental carpets, huge mahogany four-poster king size beds; floor to ceiling marble baths with Jacuzzi, and state of the art entertainment TV's, DVD players and fast speed Internet access.

Of course all rooms provide a full open style luxury kitchen with marble counters, large refrigerators with in-door ice and chilled water dispensers, dishwashers, and the two and three bedrooms offer a washer and dryer.
You can also choose to have your own private infinity pool or plunge pool.

What's New on the horizon?

Well, how about a glass walled elevator that will provide a panoramic view of Crane Beach all the way down, and a full service spa in the coconut grove on the beach.
